Dangun
The founding ancestor in Gojoseon's origin myth, born from the meeting of heaven and earth and said to have established Gojoseon.
Tradition
According to Samguk Yusa, Hwanung descended from heaven to benefit the human world. Of a bear and a tiger wishing to become human, only the bear endured the trial, became Ungnyeo, and bore Dangun Wanggeom with Hwanung. Dangun is said to have founded Gojoseon and made Asadal its capital. It is a story in which the order of heaven and life on earth meet at the beginning of a kingdom.
Legacy
The founding date and extraordinary lifespan attributed to Dangun belong to the mythic time of later texts, not to a historically verified biography. Hongik Ingan was not a saying directly left by Dangun; in Samguk Yusa, it expresses Hwanin's purpose in sending Hwanung to the human world. Over time, Dangun came to symbolize not only Gojoseon's founder but also the origin of a wider community.
